mm2

Ever cared for your nappy hair so much that you’ve wondered if it should have a particular regimen… perhaps it likes surprises every now and then? This episode’s Nappy hair Pleasure features an adept in living a toxic free life, organic beauty and hair lover Marie Manu.

Enjoy our talk.

Miz Akwele:

So let’s talk about haaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiirrrrrrrrr.
In the beginning, I was like, “when I get the right products for my hair, it’ll look as healthy as the YouTubers'”
That was my aim. Silly, I know,  but I used to envy them a billion much!
It was working until I realized how it begun shrinking more than it would … like 90% shrinkage because it’s moist every time. And I get the “so won’t your hair grow” kinda questions

Marie Manu:

Haha yes that’s the thing with moisture. Water is the best moisture so with every product that has water, expect shrinkage. However there are ways to decrease the shrinkage. Like stretching out the hair. You can have the best of both worlds.

Miz Akwele :

Oooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhh Marie I tell you!!! I did the threading for 3 days, after taking it off on day 3, it shrunk back in less than 30min. I couldn’t even hold a miserable bun.
That’s my kinda hair. Looks like the more it grows the more it shrinks.

Marie Manu :

Yikes! Humidity had the best of you. You have to embrace it then and create styles that work with it. After stretching you probably have to style it immediately

Miz Akwele :

Yeah that’s true. Is having a peculiar hair regimen necessary for all hair types?

Marie Manu :

Everyone’s hair is different but there are some basics that should go into every regimen.
If you feel as though your hair needs moisture add it, if your hair is over moisturized reduce the amount of moisture. If is dry and brittle you have to handle that.
The basics for the regimen are cleansing, deep conditioning and moisturizing. These have to be in the regimen.

Miz Akwele :

And is that expensive?

Marie Manu :

Having a regimen?

Miz Akwele :

Yes, having a regimen.

Marie Manu :

No. I think that’s the misconception people have.
You can find cheap products or DIY products to use in your regimen.
And most products last a long time.
I personally co-wash and I’ve had my co-wash for so long same with my moisturizers. What I normally use a lot is deep conditioner because my hair loves and needs it.
There are also a lot of great brands coming up in Ghana with good products.

Miz Akwele :

Uh-huh

Marie Manu :

Yup. It’s not all about money.

Miz Akwele :

Cos for most people, usually those who don’t have nappy hair worry about how expensive it is, and they’re so sure it’s that expensive. Some natural hair ladies also waste so much on products all in the name of looking for the right products for their hair.

Marie Manu :

Well to each his/her own.
It took me awhile to find products that worked. In some cases you’ll have to try different products before you find one that works.

Marie Manu :

I tried several and some of the products that work for me are on the pricey end but it lasts and works for my hair.
Others are cheap so it balances out.
It’s all relative. I know people who use products strictly under 10$ and it works for their hair.
All about researching and seeing what your hair likes.

Miz Akwele :

True

Marie Manu :

Your hair might be bougie haha
Mine might not be.

Miz Akwele :

Can you make a clear comparison between the behaviour of your hair when it wasn’t on any regimen and now? Unless it’s been from Day 1

Marie Manu :

Oh I’ve always had a regimen from day one.
Whenever I don’t follow or I neglect my hair, it becomes dry.

Miz Akwele :

It’s almost 11pm here
What’s your last word on hair regimen for the natural hair women who want to keep it real ?

Marie Manu :

Just follow the basics. You can’t cry about your hair being hard and dry when you are not taking good care of it. It’s also not expensive. There are reasonably priced products and DIY treatments you can do to achieve healthy hair.

Miz Akwele :

The cry part is my message! Thanks, Marie.

Marie Manu :

Receive it then 😆
